Chap 3: Small Triumphs

"One and Two and Three ... and Four" Ruby huffed and puffed to her new aerobics DVD.  It had been on special in the department store.  She'd also been told that she was next in line when an assistants position opened up at the lab.  Apparently Melvin Teller was impressed with her dedication and work ethic.

A ring on the doorbell one evening caused Craig and Ruby to look at each other, a question on their faces.  When Craig went to the door there was June Shallow from the consignment store.
"Hi. I was, um, in the neighbourhood and I wanted to stop by and tell you two of your paintings sold today." June looked amused at the news.
Craig actually closed his eyes a moment as a broad smile broke out on his face; relief and joy in equal parts.  June stifled a giggle.
"If you wanted to bring in more we could..." Jane trailed off while Craig nodded enthusiastically.
"You can come by tomorrow to pick up your money." June said "So, yeah, have a good night" and she turned and left.

Later that week, a fairly ecstatic Craig finally seduced his reluctant fiance.  While not strictly adhering to 'traditional' values of waiting until after marriage, Ruby had never 'been' with a man before (and while he wouldn't admit it, neither had Craig been with a woman).  Ruby had insisted, until then, on sleeping in separate bedrooms.  Ever analytical and a tad pessimistic, Ruby was adamant that they were in no position to get pregnant.  That definitely had to wait until after the wedding.  So, it had taken some time for Craig to break through her uncertainty and sell her on the idea of contraception.
